Acupuncture, Covid-19, and Opiates

There are many forms of nonsurgical treatment of pain.
These treatments include:

  • Pharmaceutical medications
  • Massage
  • Acupuncture
  • Cupping
  • Herbal medicine
  • Chiropractic
  • Physical Therapy

With the exception of Pharmaceutical medications, all of the above have the benefit of not being opiate based. Consequently, the risk of dependence and addiction are avoided. Some pharmaceutical medications are non-narcotic but those also have side effects and some can cause organ damage with long term use.

Physical therapy and Massage are limited to musculoskeletal pain. Both, like acupuncture often require repeat visits.

Within the realm of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) we have acupuncture and cupping. Cupping like Physical therapy and massage, is limited in its application but is very useful for musculoskeletal conditions. Acupuncture has the benefit of being able to treat systemic causes of pain, headaches AND musculoskeletal pain.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has led to access to acupuncture, physical therapy and massage being limited in many areas. Covid-19 has also negatively affected people with opiate addiction or dependence.

Our office is unique in that, we feature acupuncture and cupping in addition to addiction treatment. We have remained open during the pandemic with proper social distancing protocols to offer addiction treatment service (Suboxone), pain management and acupuncture.

We understand that there are people that need opiates for SEVERE pain. However, our mission is to have our patients pain free without pills”TM.

This involves the use of acupuncture, cupping and medically assisted therapy (Buprenorphine formulations, a.k.a Suboxone) to treat those in need of help with addiction. As part of our mission to have our patients pain free without pills”  we introduce our patients to non pharmaceutical methods of pain relief. Primarily acupuncture and cupping.

Our acupuncture services include treatment for any painful condition. Some of these common conditions include:

  • Bells Palsy
  • Dental Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Golfers elbow
  • Headaches
  • Knee Pain
  • Low Back Pain
  • Migraines
  • Muscle Pain
  • Muscle Spams
  • Neck Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tennis Elbow
  • TMJ pain
  • Many other conditions

Many patients will ask how often they should come in for their acupuncture or cupping visits. A simple guide is:

General Health
and maintenance =  Seasonal

Mild issues  (Pain scale 1-3) =  Weekly

Moderate issues (Pain scale 4-6) =  2x per week

Moderate to severe issues (Pain scale 7-8) 3x per week

Severe Issues (Pain Scale 8-10) =  Daily

To prepare for your visit:

    • Avoid alcohol and caffeine during treatment
    • Refrain from strenuous activity directly before and after treatment.
    • STRETCHING is good!
    • Wear loose fitting clothing
  • RELAX AND ENJOY THE MUSIC DURING TREATMENT
  • TURN OFF AND DO NOT ANSWER YOUR PHONE DURING TREATMENT!!
  • Stick to your recommended treatment schedule! Frequent visits help the healing process. Infrequent visits  slow the healing process ( see guide above).
  • A healthy diet promotes healing

We often use electro-acupuncture treatment in our office. The use of electroacupuncture allows for specific frequencies to be  utilized for specific types of pain ( neurogenic, muscular etc).

In addition to electroacupuncture , we use a very specific diagnostic paradigm that can diagnose problems that have been overlooked by other practitioners. For example, we can often uncover dental issues that contribute to bad health.
